HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 74
Celebrating the life of Douglas W. Shifflett, Sr.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 12, 2024
 

WHEREAS, Douglas W. Shifflett, Sr., the former mayor of the Town of Grottoes in the Shenandoah Valley, died on November 24, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Douglas "Doug" W. Shifflett, Sr., grew up in Rockingham County and graduated from Elkton High School, where he was a member of the football, baseball, basketball, and track teams; and

WHEREAS, Doug Shifflett continued to participate in athletics after his school years and remained an avid baseball fan throughout his life; he played for teams in the Valley Baseball League and the Rockingham County Baseball League and also served as manager of the Grottoes Cardinals baseball team; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his athletic achievements, Doug Shifflett was inducted into the Rockingham County Baseball League Hall of Fame with the Class of 2015; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of service to the community, Doug Shifflett ran for and was elected as mayor of Grottoes, and in that capacity he provided outstanding leadership to town staff and local residents for 18 years; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his wife, Kathy, and one daughter, Jeanette, Doug Shifflett will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Jeff Shifflett , Doug Shifflett, Jr., Tim Nicely, and Jeff Nicely, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Douglas W. Shifflett, Sr., a former public servant and highly admired member of the Grottoes community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Douglas W. Shifflett, Sr., as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
