Commending Mills Marine & Ship Repair.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 7, 2024
 

WHEREAS, Mills Marine & Ship Repair of Suffolk, the first Black-owned ship repair company in the United States, expanded its operational capabilities by opening a new fabrication facility and training center in Portsmouth in 2024; and

WHEREAS, Mills Marine & Ship Repair is a leading provider of comprehensive maritime services, specializing in ship repair, maintenance, and training, that is deeply dedicated to innovation and the continuous development of its workforce; and

WHEREAS, in keeping with its mission to enhance skills, promote safety, and support maritime industrial training requirements, Mills Marine & Ship Repair developed a 1.24-acre expansion, which opened on February 22, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Mills Marine & Ship Repair's new training center includes classroom spaces as well as specialized training areas for critical hands-on learning; and

WHEREAS, Mills Marine & Ship Repair's expansion also includes a fabrication facility capable of manufacturing small piece parts and welding to industry standards, as well as 48,000 square feet of external laydown space; and

WHEREAS, Mills Marine & Ship Repair's commitment to knowledge enhancement and high quality manufacturing will ensure that it remains at the forefront of the maritime sector; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Mills Marine & Ship Repair hereby be commended on the occasion of the grand opening of its new fabrication facility and training center in 2024; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Donald Mills, president of Mills Marine & Ship Repair, as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the organization's commitment to excellence in the maritime industry.
