WHEREAS, Matt Hagan of Christiansburg won his fourth National Hot Rod Association Funny Car World Championship at the Camping World Drag Racing Series finale in Pomona, California, on November 12, 2023; and
WHEREAS, a cattle rancher by trade, Matt Hagan was named as the rookie of the year in the National Hot Rod Association's AMS Pro Mod Challenge in 2006, then joined the Funny Car Series in 2008; funny cars are a specific class of drag racing vehicle with stylized body shells designed to look like manufacturer's showroom models; and
WHEREAS, after his breakout season in 2010, Matt Hagan won Funny Car World Championship titles in 2011, 2014, and 2020; over the course of his career, he has recorded at least 49 overall event titles, 87 final round appearances, and 21 number one qualifying positions; and
WHEREAS, Matt Hagan has broken multiple speed records as the first funny car driver to complete a run under four seconds in 2011, the first funny car driver to complete a run under 3.8 seconds in 2015, and the first funny car driver to reach 330 miles per hour on a 1,000-foot track in 2015, and the first funny car driver to reach 335 miles per hour in 2016; and
WHEREAS, Matt Hagan joined his current team, Tony Stewart Racing Nitro, in 2022, and his most recent world championship victory was the team's first world title; and
WHEREAS, on December 16, 2023, Christiansburg hosted a reception to celebrate Matt Hagan's accomplishments that featured a display of his four world championship trophies and a host of other memorabilia; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Matt Hagan hereby be commended on winning his fourth National Hot Rod Association Funny Car World Championship title in 2023; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Matt Hagan as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for his outstanding achievements in racing.
