WHEREAS, the Norfolk State University women's basketball team earned its second conference title in program history with a victory at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament in 2023; and
WHEREAS, the Norfolk State University Spartans defeated the reigning conference champions from Howard University by a score of 56–52; and
WHEREAS, the Howard University Bison took an early lead, but the Norfolk State Spartans relied on their strong defense and rebounding prowess to keep the game close at half time; and
WHEREAS, the Norfolk State Spartans made crucial defensive adjustments and held Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Destiny Howell, to zero points in the third quarter; and
WHEREAS, Niya Fields and Makoya Diawara combined for an 11-0 run that gave the Norfolk State Spartans a cushion in the fourth quarter, and the team held off a late counterattack to seal the victory; and
WHEREAS, Kierra Wheeler received the Outstanding Performer award and was selected to the All-Tournament Team, along with Camille Downs, while head coach Larry Vickers received the Outstanding Coach award; and
WHEREAS, as winners of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament, the Norfolk State Spartans advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Tournament, where they faced the University of South Carolina Gamecocks; and
WHEREAS, the successful season was a tribute to the skill and determination of all the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of coaches and staff, and the passionate support of the entire Norfolk State University community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Norfolk State University women's basketball team hereby be commended for winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament in 2023; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Larry Vickers, head coach of the Norfolk State University women's basketball team, as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the team's athletic achievements.
