HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 107
Celebrating the life of Em Bowles Locker Alsop.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, February 5, 2016

WHEREAS, Em Bowles Locker Alsop, a respected businesswoman in the public relations field and passionate historic preservationist, died on March 3, 2015; and

WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, Em Alsop graduated from St. Catherine's School and Vassar College; in 1936, she was one of only 20 actresses to screen test for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, impressing studio executives with her graceful movements and refined Southern accent; and

WHEREAS, after college, Em Alsop worked as an assistant to the director of public relations at The College of William and Mary, where she researched the first guide book for historic Williamsburg; and

WHEREAS, Em Alsop later joined the Powers Modeling Agency and became the first director of the agency's modeling school; she was a sought-after public speaker, radio guest, and freelance writer, who pioneered the concept of models as corporate spokeswomen; and

WHEREAS, taking a keen interest in history, Em Alsop edited a biography of former President Woodrow Wilson and was the only woman appointed to the Woodrow Wilson Centennial Celebration Commission; and

WHEREAS, Em Alsop was also the only woman appointed to the original Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission, where she advocated for the creation of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources; she served as vice president of Preservation Virginia and chair of Historic Jamestown and was a key figure in the development of a monument on the state Capitol grounds to honor Virginia women; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Benjamin, Em Alsop will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her daughter, Carter, and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Em Bowles Locker Alsop, an admired public relations professional who worked to preserve the history and heritage of the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Em Bowles Locker Alsop as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for her memory.
