11104706D WHEREAS, Michael Wardian, a graduate of Oakton High School in Fairfax County and resident of Arlington County, has competed in hundreds of marathons and is known primarily as an America marathoner and ultramarathoner; and WHEREAS, the United States Track and Field Association named Michael Wardian the 2008, 2009, and 2010 Ultra Runner of the Year; and WHEREAS, the New York Road Runners named Michael Wardian the 2009 Ultra Runner of the Year; and WHEREAS, Michael Wardian has won the 2008, 2009, and 2010 U.S. 50 km championships; and WHEREAS, in 2008, Michael Wardian won the U.S. National 100 km championship; and WHEREAS, in addition, Michael Wardian is the 2007 JFK 50 Mile winner, and won the National Marathon in Washington, D.C., three consecutive years (2006 - 2008) and in 2010; and WHEREAS, Michael Wardian held the world record from May 2007 to November 2009 for the fastest marathon while pushing a jogging stroller; and WHEREAS, in November 2009, Michael Wardian finished third in the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) World 50K championships held in Gibraltar and in 2010 finished third in the IAU World 50K championships held in Galway, Ireland, and finished third in the IAU 100K World Championships held in Gibraltar; and WHEREAS, in 2010, Michael Wardian finished third at the Marathon des Sables in 23 hours 1 minute 3 seconds, which was the best time ever by an American; and WHEREAS, on July 1, 2010, Michael Wardian set the world record for fastest indoor 200-meter track marathon record with a time of 2:27:21; and WHEREAS, Michael Wardian's achievements are attributable not only to his self-discipline, hard work, and dedication, but also to the support of his wife, Jennifer, and sons Pierce and Grant; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Michael Wardian for his outstanding achievements as a marathoner and ultramarathoner; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michael Wardian as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his outstanding running career and best wishes for continued success. |
