HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 783 Offered February 6, 2015 Celebrating the life of Cornelius Wright Sherman. ----------
Patrons-- Carr, Futrell, Hope, Keam, Kory, McQuinn, Plum, Rasoul and Ware; Senators: Barker, Ebbin, Edwards, Garrett and Saslaw

WHEREAS, Cornelius Wright Sherman of Richmond, a committed teacher and administrator who served and supported his fellow educators as a leader of an education credit union, died on December 18, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a native of Staunton, Cornelius Sherman grew up in Waynesboro, where he attended Rosenwald High School, the city's first high school for African Americans; he earned bachelor's and master's degrees from what is now Hampton University; and

WHEREAS, Cornelius Sherman pursued a fulfilling 34-year career as an educator and administrator in Hampton, serving as a biology teacher and assistant principal; he retired as the principal of Spratley Middle School, which was honored as a Virginia Vanguard School under his tenure; and

WHEREAS, Cornelius Sherman also supported his fellow educators as a board member and vice president of Hampton Roads Educators' Credit Union for 35 years; and

WHEREAS, generously volunteering his time and wise leadership to enhance the lives of community members, Cornelius Sherman served as the first African American president of the Kiwanis Club of Mercury 64 and was named Kiwanian of the Year; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by his first wife, Shirley, Cornelius Sherman will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Deborah; children, Rodney and Nicole, and their families; and numerous family members, friends, former students, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Cornelius Wright Sherman, an exceptional educator and community leader; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Cornelius Wright Sherman as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
