HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 467
Commending Ruby Batts Archie.

WHEREAS, Ruby Batts Archie has given many years of valuable service to the City of Danville; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Archie received a bachelor's and master's degree from Virginia State University and enjoyed a 37-year career as a teacher with Danville Public Schools; she spent 23 of those years as head of the George Washington High School English Department; and

WHEREAS, after retirement, Ruby Archie devoted herself to serving her community and fellow citizens through public office and involvement in various civic organizations; and

WHEREAS, initially elected in 1994, Ruby Archie served continuously on the Danville City Council, including service as vice mayor from 1996 to 1998 and mayor from 1998 to 2000; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Archie played an instrumental role in many changes and improvements to the City during her tenure on the Council and effectively represented her constituents; and

WHEREAS, a respected citizen and leader, Ruby Archie has been called upon to serve in various capacities for numerous organizations in the community, including as chairperson of the City Council Memorial Commission and as a member of the Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services Board; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Archie currently serves as a board member of the Dan River Business Development Center and on the Danville Community College President's Advisory Panel on Minority Concerns; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Archie has also generously given of her time and talents to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she currently serves as Mid-Atlantic Regional Director; Links, Inc.; Order of Eastern Star, Lydia Chapter #74; and the Salvation Army; and

WHEREAS, Ruby Archie lives her faith through her actions and as a member of Loyal Baptist Church, where she currently serves as a deaconess; and

WHEREAS, throughout her career in public service, Ruby Archie has set a high standard of integrity, selflessness, and dedication to the residents of Danville; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Ruby Batts Archie for her exemplary service to the City of Danville; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ruby Batts Archie as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration and gratitude for her remarkable efforts on behalf of her fellow citizens.
