HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 439
Commending the Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation.

WHEREAS, the Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation is the recipient of the Public-Private Partnership Award for 2009 by the Excellence in Virginia Government Awards; and

WHEREAS, the Excellence in Virginia Government Awards are presented by Virginia Commonwealth University's L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs to celebrate the accomplishments of Virginians who have made distinctive contributions to the practice of government and to the well-being of the Commonwealth and its citizens; and

WHEREAS, the successful development of the Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation is the result of an innovative partnership between the Harvest Foundation, the City of Martinsville, the West Piedmont Health District of the Virginia Department of Health, and the School of Dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University; and

WHEREAS, the Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation's Community Dental Clinic in Martinsville has provided more than $1 million in dental services to area residents; and

WHEREAS, the Community Dental Clinic provides basic dental services to persons who are unemployed and uninsured adults and children who are eligible for Medicaid benefits; and

WHEREAS, the Community Dental Clinic services are performed by students in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry and School of Dental Hygiene and are supervised by local dentists; and

WHEREAS, during 2,457 appointments in 2009, the Community Dental Clinic provided 1,416 preventive dental services, as well as 2,359 dental procedures such as extractions and root canals; and

WHEREAS, the Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation is a model for other public-private partnerships across the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation, its staff, and its enthusiastic volunteers and supporters for their outstanding public service to people in need and congratulate them on their well-deserved 2009 Public-Private Partnership Award, a distinction of the Excellence in Virginia Government Awards; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Mark A. Crabtree, President of the Piedmont Virginia Dental Health Foundation, as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude to the organization for its commitment to excellence in dental and health care in the Commonwealth.
