WHEREAS, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the progressive, gradual loss of kidney function that results in a decrease in the ability of the kidneys to remove waste from the body; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that 37 million adults in the United States have CKD, and of that number approximately 90 percent remain undiagnosed; and
WHEREAS, without diagnosis and treatment to slow its progression, CKD can progress to end-stage renal failure, which is fatal unless the patient receives dialysis or a kidney transplant; and
WHEREAS, CKD is associated with more severe COVID-19 infections, and COVID-19 may cause acute kidney damage that can lead to dialysis or even death; and
WHEREAS, regular screening and early detection can prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure, and it is essential that awareness of kidney disease and the importance of prevention and early detection be raised; and
WHEREAS, kidney disease awareness empowers patients and families to seek diagnosis, support, and appropriate treatment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate March, in 2024 and in each succeeding year, as Kidney Disease Awareness Month in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this month on the General Assembly's website.
