WHEREAS, the Gretna High School football team claimed its fifth state title in the past nine seasons when it won the 2011 Virginia High School League Group A Division 2 football championship; and WHEREAS, after advancing to the state championship game last season, the Gretna Hawks were determined to return and claim victory; they defeated a talented Goochland High School team 21 - 16 to take the 2011 crown; and WHEREAS, as in the team's previous 14 games this season, the Gretna Hawks held the Goochland team to just two touchdowns; the Hawks did not allow any opponent to score more than two touchdowns per game all season long; and WHEREAS, the Gretna High School football team boasts a powerful defense, which helped propel them to victory; in the third quarter, the Hawks recovered a fumble by Goochland and ran it to the one-yard line, scoring a touchdown two plays later; and WHEREAS, the Gretna Hawks' offense was so strong in its running game that the team did not even attempt a pass in the second half, with all offensive plays taking place on the ground for a gain of 92 yards; and WHEREAS, a dedicated coaching staff, ably led by head coach Kevin Saunders, and an enthusiastic and supportive Gretna High School community also contributed to the team's success; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Gretna High School football team on winning the 2011 Virginia High School League Group A Division 2 state championship; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kevin Saunders, head coach of the Gretna High School football team, as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations on an outstanding season. |
