WHEREAS, the Virginia Capital Trail is a significant economic, historical, cultural, and recreational asset of the Commonwealth for both residents and visitors of all ages and abilities to enjoy; and WHEREAS, the Virginia Capital Trail is a multiuse pedestrian and bicycle trail that connects the Commonwealth's past and present capitals of Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Richmond; and WHEREAS, the Virginia Capital Trail is being developed through a public-private partnership between the Commonwealth and the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation; and WHEREAS, the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation is the principal advocate for the project with the Virginia Department of Transportation and other public and private stakeholders to build a world-class trail and related facilities; and WHEREAS, the Virginia Capital Trail is being built along the Route 5 Scenic Corridor, extending over 50 miles through five jurisdictions and showcasing 400 years of history of one of the first inland travel routes in North America; and WHEREAS, other planned attractions for the Virginia Capital Trail will include interpretive and wayfinding signage, kiosks, pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, interactive educational stations, special events, and youth outreach programs; and WHEREAS, the tireless efforts of the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation already have resulted in major improvements to the beautiful trail and adjacent areas, which have been accomplished through private funding; and WHEREAS, the partnership between the Commonwealth and the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation serves as an excellent model for public-private partnerships for the development of public facilities and infrastructure across Virginia; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation, its staff, board of directors, and generous supporters and corporate sponsors for their hard work and dedication to the project and encourage them in their vision to establish a world-class trail in the Commonwealth; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Capital Trail Foundation as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation of its many achievements and best wishes for the success and completion of the Virginia Capital Trail. |
