Commending Marie Ridder.

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder of McLean, a distinguished journalist and passionate environmental conservationist, celebrated her 99th birthday on January 27, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder began her career in journalism as a correspondent for the Philadelphia Bulletin, covering reconstruction in post-World War II Europe; and

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder subsequently served as an editor for Condé Nast magazine and the Washington, D.C., editor for Vogue, Mademoiselle, and Glamour magazines; and

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder wrote for the Washington Post and the Boston Globe and worked as the Washington correspondent for Ridder Publications, which later became Knight Ridder; and

WHEREAS, over the course of her career, Marie Ridder also supported early children education as deputy to the national director of Project Head Start and served as a liaison to Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson, first lady of the United States, from 1964 to 1968; and

WHEREAS, Marie Ridder was a champion for environmental protection and served on the boards of the Piedmont Environmental Council, the Trust for Public Land, and the League of Conservation Voters; and

WHEREAS, in addition, Marie Ridder provided her leadership and expertise to the Sasha Bruce House, which offers compassionate care to abused, abandoned, neglected, and runaway children in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, in 2019, Marie Ridder received the Clara Mortenson Beyer Women and Children First Award from U.S. Representative Don Beyer for her outstanding accomplishments and commitment to empowering women; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Marie Ridder on the occasion of her 99th birthday in 2024; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Marie Ridder as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for her lifetime of personal and professional achievements.
