WHEREAS, Louise Hope Pitt Miller, a beloved camp director, photographer, and retired teacher, died on March 26, 2009; and WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, Louise Miller was born on March 30, 1950, the oldest daughter of Betty and the late Malcolm Pitt, Jr.; and WHEREAS, Louise Miller graduated from Collegiate School in 1968; she received a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in English education from the University of Virginia, where she was in the first class of undergraduate women; and WHEREAS, a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher, Louise Miller taught English in Albemarle County before moving to England to teach at TASIS, The American School in England; she then taught English and photography at the Gilman School in Baltimore and at St. Anne's-Belfield School in Charlottesville; and WHEREAS, Louise Miller was an outstanding educator who was known for her high standards and genuine affection for her students; and WHEREAS, after her retirement from teaching in 2002, Louise Miller volunteered at George Mason Elementary School in Church Hill, Collegiate School, and First Presbyterian Church in Richmond; and WHEREAS, for 19 summers, Louise Miller worked at Camp Virginia, a camp for boys in Rockbridge County that offers swimming, horseback riding, archery, and sports activities; her grandfather was the camp's founding director and Louise Miller and her husband became the third-generation directors several years ago; and WHEREAS, a talented photographer, Louise Miller loved taking pictures of the campers enjoying themselves at Camp Virginia; she would then forward the pictures to the campers or their parents as mementos of their time at Camp Virginia; and WHEREAS, a selfless and loving woman, Louise Miller battled cancer for the last 15 years of her life, and working with the energetic boys at Camp Virginia was a great joy and source of strength for her; and WHEREAS, Louise Miller will be greatly missed by her husband, Kenneth Cameron Miller III; her mother Betty Pitt; her sisters Betty Pitt Cimmino and Anne Pitt Rogers; and the staff and boys of Camp Virginia; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a beloved teacher and camp director who inspired and loved thousands of children over the years, Louise Hope Pitt Miller; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Louise Hope Pitt Miller as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory. |
