Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That §54.1-2950 of the Code of Virginia is amended and reenacted as follows:
§54.1-2950. Requisite training and educational achievements of assistants.
For the purposes of this section:
"Applicant" means (i) a physician assistant previously licensed pursuant to this article or (ii) an individual who has graduated from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant within the last three months and who is registered to take an examination.
"Examination" means an examination administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
The Board shall establish a testing program to determine the training and educational achievements of the physician assistant or the Board may accept other evidence, such as experience or completion of an approved training program, in lieu of testing and shall establish this as a prerequisite for approval of the licensee's application.
Pending the outcome of the next examination administered by
the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, the Board
may grant provisional licensure to graduates of physician assistants
curricula that are approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education
for the Physician Assistant an applicant. Such provisional licensure
shall be granted at the discretion of the Board.
A provisional license issued pursuant to this section shall be valid for six months or until an applicant obtains full licensure, whichever is shorter. After the expiration of the initial six months, the Board may renew an applicant's provisional licensure for one additional six-month period. No provisional license shall be valid for a period longer than one year. Upon the expiration of an applicant's provisional license, such applicant must have obtained full licensure or must immediately cease to perform the health care tasks specific to physician assistant practice.
If an applicant fails an examination, the Board shall revoke his provisional licensure. An applicant may reapply for provisional licensure after such revocation if the applicant has failed no more than one examination.
