WHEREAS, Homes For Our Troops is conducting a Community | ||
Kickoff for U.S. Army Corporal Duane McGhghy on November 18, 2023, | ||
in Temple; and | ||
WHEREAS, Since 2004, HFOT has built more than 360 fully | ||
accessible custom homes nationwide for seriously injured veterans; | ||
each house features over 40 adaptations that help facilitate | ||
independent living, such as wider halls and doorways, automatic | ||
door openers, roll-under sinks, stovetops, and counters, and | ||
pull-down shelving; the nonprofit also provides veterans with | ||
financial planning assistance, homeownership education, and home | ||
warranty coverage; and | ||
WHEREAS, The Community Kickoff event marks the start of | ||
construction on a four-bedroom, two-bath home for Corporal McGhghy; | ||
during a deployment to Iraq in 2007, Corporal McGhghy was serving as | ||
a member of Delta Company, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade | ||
Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, when his vehicle was hit by an | ||
explosively formed penetrator; he was severely wounded as a result | ||
of the blast, losing his left leg below the knee and sustaining a | ||
traumatic brain injury; and | ||
WHEREAS, With the help of a prosthesis and a wheelchair, | ||
Corporal McGhghy has continued to enjoy an active lifestyle; he | ||
dedicates his efforts to giving back to his fellow veterans, and he | ||
rides motorcycles with the Road Warrior Foundation and goes | ||
skydiving with Jump For Valor, two organizations that support the | ||
military community; moreover, he and his wife, Cortney, operate | ||
their own business, Hey Darlin Plants; they are the proud parents of | ||
three children, Austin, Chloe, and Oliver; and | ||
WHEREAS, Homes For Our Troops is helping to equip injured | ||
veterans with the resources they need to build productive and | ||
fulfilling lives, and Corporal Duane McGhghy's new home is sure to | ||
serve him and his family well in the years to come; now, therefore, | ||
be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature, 3rd | ||
Called Session, hereby commemorate the Homes For Our Troops | ||
Community Kickoff event for U.S. Army Corporal Duane McGhghy and | ||
commend him for his brave and dedicated service to his country; and, | ||
be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Corporal McGhghy as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas Senate. |
