Ronald Lynn Raspberry | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of Ronald Lynn | ||
Raspberry, who died April 8, 2013, at the age of 71; and | ||
WHEREAS, | ||
WHEREAS, After his military service, he entered into a | ||
four-year program with the Houston Joint Apprenticeship and | ||
Training Committee and joined the International Brotherhood of | ||
Electrical Workers Local 716; he served on numerous committees | ||
and was elected to a number of board positions with his union; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Raspberry was elected as business manager for | ||
Local 716 in 1974, beginning a long and productive career serving | ||
the labor movement; as business manager for 15 years, he was the | ||
local's chief contract negotiator, and he served for five years | ||
as representative to the Sixth District International Executive | ||
Council of his union; and | ||
WHEREAS, He went on to serve for more than two decades as | ||
the executive secretary of the Houston Gulf Coast Building and | ||
Construction Trades Council and as labor relations officer for | ||
the Houston law firm of Williams Kherkher; he was named Labor | ||
Leader of the Year in 1986 by the West Gulf Ports Council; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Raspberry was active in Democratic Party | ||
politics at the local, state, and national levels, representing | ||
labor at numerous conferences and political conventions; he was | ||
appointed by Governor Mark White to serve on the Management Task | ||
Force for the Texas State Treasurer and by Governor Ann Richards | ||
to serve on the Texas Commission of Licensing and Regulation; and | ||
WHEREAS, A man of courage, passion, and determination, he | ||
gave unselfishly to the working men and women of Texas, and his | ||
wisdom, his strength in the face of adversity, and his enthusiasm | ||
for living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten; and | ||
WHEREAS, | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd | ||
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
family of Ronald Lynn Raspberry; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of Ronald Raspberry. | ||
