John Hamshire Williams | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | ||
commemorates the life of John Hamshire Williams, who died on | ||
October 20, 2023, at the age of 90; and | ||
WHEREAS, John Williams was born on October 17, 1933, in El | ||
Paso, and in 1941, he moved with his family to Pecos; he | ||
experienced the joys of rural living while growing up on his | ||
family's farm before attending Saint Edward's High School, and he | ||
went on to study at The University of Texas; and | ||
WHEREAS, A gifted student and athlete, he played on the | ||
university's 1952 football team and participated in the Reserve | ||
Officers' Training Corps program; John graduated in 1957 with a | ||
degree in mechanical engineering, and he was commissioned as a | ||
second lieutenant in the United States Air Force and was later | ||
accepted into Harvard Business School; and | ||
WHEREAS, John worked for several years for the Western | ||
Company before beginning a long and successful career of more | ||
than three decades in the securities industry; over the course of | ||
his career, he gained valuable experience working for a number of | ||
different firms in places like San Antonio and Dallas, and he | ||
came to be regarded as a trusted expert and a respected leader in | ||
his field; and | ||
WHEREAS, John served in multiple executive and leadership | ||
roles at firms in the industry and in professional organizations, | ||
and he retired from his career in the securities industry in | ||
1999; guided by his natural talent for business and his | ||
entrepreneurial spirit, John was instrumental in underwriting | ||
Clear Channel Communications, CCU; he served with distinction as | ||
director of the successful, multimillion-dollar company until | ||
2008, when it was sold to an investment group; and | ||
WHEREAS, In addition to his rewarding professional | ||
endeavors, John delighted in traveling with his family to visit | ||
Pecos and on skiing and quail-hunting trips; among his favorite | ||
pastimes, he enjoyed golfing and congregating with his closest | ||
friends at Rivercrest Country Club in Fort Worth, and he was a | ||
founding member of the Arlington Heights Cribbage Club; during | ||
the holiday season, John took great care in preparing his | ||
specialty pecans, which he delivered and shipped to his many | ||
friends around the globe; and | ||
WHEREAS, John was an adoring father to his three children, | ||
whom he shared with Suzanne Smith, his first wife and a cherished | ||
friend and companion in his later years; he was blessed to enjoy 27 | ||
years of marriage with his beloved second wife, the late Anne | ||
McLean, until the time of her passing in 2012, and he treasured his | ||
grandchildren and his many loving extended family members; and | ||
WHEREAS, John's wisdom, warmth, and determined spirit were | ||
a source of strength and comfort to his family and countless | ||
friends, and he leaves behind an inspiring legacy and many | ||
precious memories that will be forever treasured by his loved | ||
ones and by all who were privileged to know him and to share in | ||
his life; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th | ||
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby extend sincere | ||
condolences to the bereaved family of John Hamshire Williams; | ||
and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of John Williams. | ||
