relating to inclusion of instruction regarding police officers in | ||
the required curriculum for ninth grade public school students. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Section 28.025, Education Code, is amended by | ||
adding Subsection (b-20) to read as follows: | ||
(b-20) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules to | ||
include in the required curriculum for students in ninth grade | ||
instruction regarding: | ||
(1) the role of law enforcement and the duties and | ||
responsibilities of police officers; | ||
(2) a person's rights concerning interactions with | ||
police officers; | ||
(3) proper behavior for civilians and police officers | ||
during interactions; | ||
(4) laws regarding questioning and detention by police | ||
officers, including any law requiring a person to present proof of | ||
identity to a police officer, and the consequences for a person's or | ||
officer's failure to comply with those laws; and | ||
(5) how and where to file a complaint against a police | ||
officer. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2018-2019 | ||
school year. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
