WHEREAS, Scott Coulson retired as band director of Poteet | ||
High School in Mesquite in May 2011, concluding a distinguished | ||
career in education that spanned three decades; and | ||
WHEREAS, When Poteet High School opened in 1987, Mr. Coulson | ||
became its first band director, and the school's musicians went on | ||
to bring home many honors under his skilled leadership; the Pirate | ||
Band won 23 University Interscholastic League Sweepstakes Awards | ||
and claimed the UIL State Marching Championship in 1997, 2005, and | ||
2007, and it earned Best in Class and Best in Contest awards at | ||
music festivals all over the United States; and | ||
WHEREAS, The Poteet High concert band reached the state | ||
finals in the Texas Music Educators Association State Honor Band | ||
competition six times during Mr. Coulson's tenure, and it was named | ||
the 2008 TMEA 4A Honor Band; as a true testament to his positive | ||
influence, one of his first students eventually returned to Poteet | ||
High to become an assistant band director, and another assistant | ||
trained with him as a student teacher; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Coulson graduated from Mesquite High School in | ||
1976 and earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in music | ||
education from East Texas State University; before joining the | ||
faculty at Poteet High, he served for seven years as an assistant | ||
band director at North Mesquite High; his professional affiliations | ||
include the TMEA, the Texas Bandmasters Association, and the | ||
American School Band Directors Association, and he has served as | ||
concert band vice president of the Texas Music Adjudicators | ||
Association; in 2005, he was named to the John Philip Sousa | ||
Foundation Legion of Honor, and he was invited to join the | ||
prestigious American Bandmasters Association in 2011; and | ||
WHEREAS, A caring and dedicated mentor, Scott Coulson has | ||
inspired many gifted young musicians to reach their full artistic | ||
potential, and he has instilled in innumerable young Texans the | ||
discipline and commitment to excellence that are the foundations | ||
for success; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Scott Coulson | ||
on his retirement as band director of Poteet High School and extend | ||
to him sincere best wishes as he begins the next exciting chapter of | ||
his life; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Mr. Coulson as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
