WHEREAS, November 27, 2023, marks the 60th wedding | ||
anniversary of Dr. Walter Wornardt and Ruth Wornardt of Houston, | ||
and this joyous event provides a fitting opportunity to reflect on | ||
their romantic journey together as husband and wife; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Walter W. Wornardt | ||
Jr. received his bachelor's degree in geology from the University | ||
of Wisconsin-Madison and went on to earn his doctorate from the | ||
Department of Paleontology at the University of California, | ||
Berkeley with a National Science Foundation Fellowship; he began | ||
his career in the oil and gas industry with Chevron in | ||
San Francisco, where he would meet his future wife; and | ||
WHEREAS, The former Ruth Chalmers Prentice, a native of | ||
Washington, D.C., attended Bible college for two years and | ||
completed her registered nursing degree at Alexandria Hospital | ||
School of Nursing; in 1960, she relocated to San Francisco; and | ||
WHEREAS, After dating for a few years, Dr. and Mrs. Wornardt | ||
rendezvoused in Europe and wed in Gibraltar in 1963; Dr. Wornardt | ||
was employed by the Esso Production Research Company in Houston | ||
from 1965 to 1968 and then by Union Oil Company in California until | ||
1977, when he became a professor of geology at the University of | ||
Redlands; he worked for ERT Consultants in Denver, Colorado, as | ||
well; the couple settled in Houston in 1990, and Mrs. Wornardt | ||
worked at the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Veterans Affairs | ||
Medical Center until her retirement in 2012, after 35 years in | ||
nursing; Dr. Wornardt taught at Rice University from 1990 to 1992 | ||
while serving as president and CEO of Micro-Strat, Incorporated, | ||
for four decades; and | ||
WHEREAS, The Wornardts have been active congregants of First | ||
Presbyterian Church, and they have also been members of | ||
professional groups such as the American Association of Petroleum | ||
Geologists, the Petroleum Club, and the Houston Geological Society, | ||
as well as of such community organizations as the Houston Opera, the | ||
Houston Club, and Toastmasters International; moreover, they are | ||
both authors, Dr. Wornardt of The Six-Month Honeymoon, a memoir of | ||
their romantic adventure across Europe and through East Africa in | ||
their red Triumph Spitfire, and Mrs. Wornardt of Calluses on His | ||
Knees, which is about the ministry of her father, Harvey Prentice; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, The six decades of marriage that Dr. and | ||
Mrs. Wornardt have shared is an eloquent affirmation of the meaning | ||
of love and commitment, and their enduring union is an inspiration | ||
to all who know them; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate Dr. Walter | ||
Wornardt and Ruth Wornardt on their 60th wedding anniversary and | ||
extend to them sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be | ||
it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Dr. and Mrs. Wornardt as an expression of high regard | ||
by the Texas House of Representatives. |
