WHEREAS, The 105th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly | ||
cause for celebration, and Eva Hagle of Midland marked this | ||
momentous milestone in her life on January 28, 2017; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born in 1912, Eva Hagle grew up on a ranch in | ||
Stonewall County with 12 siblings; she was working at her sister's | ||
boardinghouse in Artesia, New Mexico, when she met her future | ||
husband, John "Whitey" Hagle; after their marriage in July 1938, | ||
the couple settled in Crane; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Hagle moved to Wilmington, California, | ||
to work in the shipyards during World War II; while employed at the | ||
California Shipbuilding Corporation on Terminal Island in Los | ||
Angeles County, Mrs. Hagle became exceptionally skilled in the use | ||
of an acetylene torch, much to the disgruntlement of some of her | ||
male colleagues; and | ||
WHEREAS, After the war, the Hagles returned to Crane to raise | ||
their daughter, Rita; they opened the Airport Drive-In and also | ||
owned a sand and gravel business and a truck weigh station until the | ||
death of Mr. Hagle in 1962; Mrs. Hagle worked at C. R. Anthony for a | ||
time as well; following her retirement in 1977, she relocated to | ||
California to be close to her daughter and grandsons, Jeffrey and | ||
Dennis; the family settled in Midland in 1981; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hagle continued to live independently until | ||
May 2016, and she credits her longevity to the philosophy "Work | ||
hard, mind your own business, and keep on dancing"; until recent | ||
years, she was a member of the Permian Basin Dance Club, and | ||
although bad knees have now obliged her to eliminate the polka and | ||
two-step from her routine, she continues to enjoy listening to | ||
music; and | ||
WHEREAS, An inspiring member of the Greatest Generation, Eva | ||
Hagle has witnessed a panorama of change over the course of more | ||
than a century, and she has met life's challenges and opportunities | ||
with determination and grace, earning the deep admiration of all | ||
who are privileged to know her; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby congratulate Eva Hagle on her 105th birthday and | ||
extend to her sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be | ||
it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Mrs. Hagle as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
House of Representatives. |
