WHEREAS, A respected member of the Texas legislative | ||
community was lost with the death of Nelson Reyes Salinas, | ||
governmental affairs manager for the Texas Association of Business, | ||
on April 29, 2015, at the age of 37; and | ||
WHEREAS, Nelson Salinas was born in South Texas on October 1, | ||
1977, and he grew up in Sharyland and graduated from high school in | ||
1996; he attended South Texas Community College and The University | ||
of Texas--Pan American, where he earned a bachelor's degree in | ||
political science; he put himself through school by working on oil | ||
rigs and construction sites, and he went on to work for three years | ||
with the migrant program at McAllen Independent School District and | ||
for one year as a substitute teacher at La Joya ISD; and | ||
WHEREAS, An abiding interest in politics brought Mr. Salinas | ||
to Austin and to the early voting section of the Travis County Clerk | ||
Elections Division, where he trained poll workers and managed the | ||
day-to-day operations of the office; and | ||
WHEREAS, Before beginning his employment with TAB, he had a | ||
notable tenure as a legislative aide; he worked for State | ||
Representative Dora Olivo and managed a highly successful | ||
reelection campaign for her; he later served as legislative | ||
director for State Representative Roberto Gutierrez for several | ||
sessions before returning to South Texas to manage the winning | ||
reelection campaign of State District Judge Ed Aparacio; he | ||
returned to the legislature as the chief of staff for State | ||
Representative Yvonne Gonzalez Toureilles; and | ||
WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, he was a strong | ||
advocate for quality education for all students in Texas; and | ||
WHEREAS, Nelson Salinas was well-known around the State | ||
Capitol as a supportive mentor to younger staffers and as a warm and | ||
kind-hearted friend, always ready with a smile and good advice; | ||
although he was taken much too soon, he leaves behind a legacy that | ||
will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Nelson Reyes Salinas | ||
and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his | ||
mother, Maria G. Salinas; to his siblings, Melibea Salinas, Argelio | ||
Salinas, and Vianney Salinas Paredes; to his nieces and nephews, | ||
Veronica Rae Guzman, Jacob Guzman, Donovan Gamez, Danyela Gamez, | ||
Allana Paredes, Diego Hipolito, and Dominick Gamez; and to his | ||
other relatives and many friends; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Nelson | ||
Reyes Salinas. |
