WHEREAS, Gerald Fagan of Livingston was inducted into the | ||
Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame by the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu | ||
International School Bandmaster Fraternity on July 22, 2017; and | ||
WHEREAS, This prestigious honor recognizes retired Texas | ||
band directors whose contributions have greatly benefited the | ||
schools and communities in which they have worked; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born in Scottsville, Gerald Fagan demonstrated a | ||
love for music from an early age, and in spite of a childhood polio | ||
diagnosis that left him with physical limitations, he received a | ||
music scholarship to Stephen F. Austin State University, where he | ||
earned his bachelor's degree in 1964 and his master of arts degree | ||
in 1973; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Fagan began his career as a band director in the | ||
Big Sandy Independent School District and went on to lead programs | ||
at schools in Joaquin, Troup, Hallsville, Hurst, Center, Rusk, | ||
Cleveland, Tarkington, Corrigan, and Livingston; he spent much of | ||
his career at small schools, where his talent for developing | ||
underperforming bands into sweepstakes winners earned him the | ||
nickname "The Miracle Worker"; and | ||
WHEREAS, After 32 years as a music educator, Mr. Fagan | ||
officially retired, but for another decade, he continued sharing | ||
his time and expertise in various capacities with schools that had | ||
lost their band director; he has also served as director of the | ||
Livingston Swing Big Jazz Band as well as the Livingston Area | ||
Community Band; and | ||
WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Fagan enjoys the love and | ||
support of his wife, Bobbie Fagan; the couple are the proud parents | ||
of six children, Susan, Sharon, Shelly, Jerry, Christy, and | ||
Meredith; and | ||
WHEREAS, A caring and dedicated mentor, Gerald Fagan has | ||
inspired countless gifted young musicians to reach their full | ||
artistic potential, and his numerous accomplishments indeed merit | ||
special recognition; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Gerald Fagan | ||
on his induction into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame and extend | ||
to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Mr. Fagan as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
House of Representatives. |
