WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their | ||
memories of Silvina Solis Hinojosa of La Grulla, who died on May 15, | ||
2017, at the age of 92; and | ||
WHEREAS, Silvina Solis was born in La Grulla on December 8, | ||
1924, to Juan and Dolores Solis, and she graduated from Rio Grande | ||
City High School in 1942; she was joined in matrimony to Isidro | ||
Hinojosa, and the couple became the devoted parents of five | ||
children, Isidro, Alma, Ricardo, Linda, and Jose; later in life, | ||
she was blessed with eight grandchildren and five | ||
great-grandchildren; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hinojosa aspired to become a teacher from a | ||
young age and earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in | ||
education from The University of Texas--Pan American; she taught | ||
for the La Joya Independent School District for 28 years, during | ||
which time she was named the 1972 Teacher of the Year, and then | ||
spent another 10 years as an administrator; and | ||
WHEREAS, Over the course of her career, Mrs. Hinojosa headed | ||
the remedial reading department, coached University | ||
Interscholastic League teams, organized the district's first | ||
junior high school student council, directed the ESAA program, and | ||
led the GED program; after retiring in 1985, she returned to serve | ||
both La Joya ISD and Hidalgo ISD as a parental involvement | ||
consultant; she also served on the Rio Grande City Consolidated ISD | ||
school board from 1998 to 2011, and during her tenure she was | ||
instrumental in the reestablishment of a high school in La Grulla; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, A woman of strong religious faith, Mrs. Hinojosa | ||
donated land in La Victoria for the construction of Christo Rey | ||
Catholic Church, and she was active in the life of Holy Family | ||
Catholic Church in La Grulla, where she served for a number of years | ||
on the parish council; deeply engaged in her community, she also | ||
advised the USDA Farm Service Agency of Starr County and served on | ||
the boards of the Starr County appraisal district and hospital | ||
district; while leading the latter board as president, she oversaw | ||
the introduction of ambulance service in rural areas and the | ||
establishment of a school to train licensed vocational nurses; and | ||
WHEREAS, A devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, and | ||
an inspiring educator, Silvina Hinojosa lived a rich and purposeful | ||
life, and her example of service to others will continue to inspire | ||
all those who knew and loved her; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory | ||
of Silvina Solis Hinojosa and extend heartfelt sympathy to her | ||
family and many friends; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Silvina | ||
Solis Hinojosa. | ||
