WHEREAS, The 90th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed a | ||
cause for celebration, and Beatrice Conn is marking that notable | ||
milestone in her life on September 28, 2013; and | ||
WHEREAS, Beatrice Conn was born in Bristol, a small town in | ||
Ellis County, in 1923; during her years in school, she was greatly | ||
influenced by a number of her teachers, whose encouragement | ||
motivated her to excel in her studies; other fond memories from her | ||
youth include her selection for the cheerleading squad when she was | ||
a junior and the honor she enjoyed of carrying the American flag | ||
while leading the marching band; and | ||
WHEREAS, In 1940, while still in high school, she met her | ||
future husband, George, on a blind date arranged by friends; the | ||
pair fell in love at first sight, and they were married in 1941, | ||
shortly after her graduation; over the years, they became the proud | ||
parents of two sons; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mrs. Conn found work as a secretary at the Ferris | ||
Brick Company and then as an office manager for Marilyn Belt; after | ||
the United States entered World War II, Mr. Conn enlisted in the | ||
merchant marine and served on a number of ships until the end of | ||
hostilities; within a short while of returning home, he was | ||
inspired to enter the pastorate, and the ensuing years saw the | ||
family move to various communities as he followed his calling; | ||
while living in Myrtle Springs in Van Zandt County, Mrs. Conn took a | ||
job at Terrell State Hospital, and she continued to work at the | ||
facility until her retirement in 1987; and | ||
WHEREAS, The couple later grew peas and tomatoes and had | ||
success as merchants at the First Monday Trade Days in Canton; since | ||
her husband's passing in 2003, Mrs. Conn has continued to draw | ||
comfort from her strong religious faith and has widened her circle | ||
of close friends; and | ||
WHEREAS, Beatrice Conn has witnessed a panorama of change | ||
during nine decades of life well lived, and her birthday offers a | ||
fitting opportunity to remind her of the special place she holds in | ||
the hearts of all of her loved ones; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Beatrice Conn on her | ||
90th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued | ||
happiness; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Mrs. Conn as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
House of Representatives. |
