| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Section 253.035, Election Code, is amended by | ||
| adding Subsection (c-1) to read as follows: | ||
| (c-1) The prohibition prescribed by Subsection (a) includes | ||
| the personal use of political contributions accepted by a person as | ||
| a candidate or officeholder or by a specific-purpose committee for | ||
| the purpose of supporting the person as a candidate or assisting the | ||
| person as an officeholder to settle a civil action asserting a claim | ||
| against the officeholder. | ||
| SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only | ||
| to the use of a political contribution that occurs on or after the | ||
| effective date of this Act. The use of a political contribution | ||
| that occurs before the effective date of this Act is governed by the | ||
| law in effect on the date the use occurred, and the former law is | ||
| continued in effect for that purpose. | ||
| SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. | ||
