A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to review and approval of advanced placement courses by
  the State Board of Education.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Section 28.009, Education Code, is amended by
  adding Subsections (a-6) and (a-7) to read as follows:
         (a-6)  The State Board of Education shall review any advanced
  placement course offered for compliance with:
               (1)  the school laws of this state; and
               (2)  the essential knowledge and skills adopted by the
  board.
         (a-7)  A school district may only offer advanced placement
  courses that comply with:
               (1)  the school laws of this state; and
               (2)  the essential knowledge and skills adopted by the
  State Board of Education.
         SECTION 2.  Section 28.023, Education Code, is amended by
  adding Subsection (a-1) to read as follows:
         (a-1)  For purposes of this section, a board of trustees may
  approve only an advanced placement examination that is for an
  advanced placement course offered in accordance with Section
  28.009.
         SECTION 3.  This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024
  school year.
         SECTION 4.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
  a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
  provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
  Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
  Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
