A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE MEMBERS OF THE J. L. MANN GIRLS VARSITY LACROSSE TEAM FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2015 CLASS AAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that the J. L. Mann girls lacrosse team of Greenville County led the state again at the championship game held at Chapin High School's Cecil Woolbright Field on Saturday, April 25, 2015; and

Whereas, the J. L. Mann Lady Patriots delighted their fans when they won a triple tiara, their third consecutive state championship, by defeating Bishop England High School 13-10 in the title match; and

Whereas, two years earlier when the same two schools had faced off at the state championship, J. L. Mann had to hang on to keep the trophy as the Battling Bishops closed with a ferocious attempt to take the top honors, but this year the Lady Patriots not only held their ground, but they built on their lead; and

Whereas, entering the final match with fifty-four consecutive in-state wins, J. L. Mann showed its powerhouse status in the state finals by taking an early 4-0 lead and never handed the lead to their Bishop England opponents; and

Whereas, although the Battling Bishops managed to tie the score at 4-4 with less than three minutes in the first half, J. L. Mann answered with two points before the end of the period; and

Whereas, in the second half, Bishop England closed the lead to 9-8 before Lady Patriots Ava Alvarez and Ashli Woodard scored seconds later to widen J. L. Mann's lead again; and

Whereas, with fewer than three minutes left in the game, Ashli Woodard and teammate Caty Brown both scored, building J. L. Mann's lead to 13-8. The Battling Bishops were only able to add two points before the game ended; and

Whereas, committed to winning championships by having a strong defense, J. L. Mann provided effective defense in front of Anna Lee Henry while she kept the crease and deflected numerous penalty shots from Bishop England; and

Whereas, Ashli Woodard and Ava Alvarez posted three goals each for J. L. Mann; Blakley Wilson, Lucy Ellison, and Taylor Williams all scored twice; and teammate Caty Brown added one goal. The team finished the season with a 17-3 record and its fifth state title, more than any other girls lacrosse program in the State; and

Whereas, in a sport that demands quickness and agility, strategy and strength, Head Coach Kristy Schumacher and her talented coaching staff utilized their own athletic ability and training to mold a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable throughout life both on and off the field; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives value the pride and recognition that the J. L. Mann lacrosse players have brought to their school and expect to hear of their continued achievements in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the members of the J. L. Mann girls varsity lacrosse team for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2015 Class AAAA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Charles S. Mayfield and Coach Kristy Schumacher.
