A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the month of October 2010 as "Breast Cancer
Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Women's and men's health is essential to the health
of our families, our communities and our society; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 2,000 women in this Commonwealth and
390 men in the United States die each year of breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths
in this Commonwealth in women between the ages of 25 and 54 and
primarily affects men between the ages of 60 and 70; and
WHEREAS, Three of four cases of breast cancer arise in women
with no known risk factors; and
WHEREAS, Men are typically diagnosed at a late stage due to a
lack of awareness that men can develop the disease; and
WHEREAS, Breast cancer continues to be the most commonly
diagnosed cancer in women in the United States, regardless of

race or ethnicity; and
WHEREAS, There are more than two million breast cancer
survivors alive today in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Nearly all breast cancers can be treated
successfully if found early; and
WHEREAS, When breast cancer is found at its earliest stage,
the five-year survival rate is 98%; and
WHEREAS, One in eight women and one in 1,000 men in the
United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their
lifetimes; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of October 2010
as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania, applaud the
thousands of professionals and volunteers in the fight against
breast cancer and encourage all women and men to take advantage
of the early detection services available to them.
