| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating December 3, 2012, as "International Day of Persons |
2 | with Disabilities" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, More than one billion people, or approximately 15% |
4 | of the world's population, live with some form of disability; |
5 | and |
6 | WHEREAS, Persons with disabilities, "the world's largest |
7 | minority," often face barriers to participation in all aspects |
8 | of society; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Barriers can take a variety of forms, including |
10 | those relating to the physical environment or to information and |
11 | communications technology (ICT), or those resulting from |
12 | legislation or policy or from societal attitudes or |
13 | discrimination; and |
14 | WHEREAS, The result of these barriers is that persons with |
15 | disabilities do not have equal access to society or services, |
16 | including education, employment, health care, transportation, |
17 | political participation or justice; and |

1 | WHEREAS, The commemoration of "International Day of Persons |
2 | with Disabilities" (IDPD) in 2012 provides an opportunity to |
3 | address this exclusion by focusing on promoting accessibility |
4 | and removing all types of barriers in society; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The main theme of IDPD 2012 is "Removing barriers to |
6 | create an inclusive and accessible society for all"; therefore |
7 | be it |
8 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate December 3, 2012, as |
9 | "International Day of Persons with Disabilities" in |
10 | Pennsylvania. |
