A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the month of November 2012 as "National Hospice and

2

Palliative Care Month" in Pennsylvania and encouraging all

3

Pennsylvanians to increase their understanding and awareness

4

of care at the end of life.

5

WHEREAS, Hospice and palliative care offer the highest

6

quality services and support to patients and family caregivers

7

facing serious and life-limiting illness; and

8

WHEREAS, Hospice care and palliative care providers take the

9

time to ask what is important to those they are caring for and

10

listen to what their patients and families say; and

11

WHEREAS, Skilled and compassionate hospice and palliative

12

care professionals, including physicians, nurses, social

13

workers, therapists, counselors, health aides and clergy,

14

provide comprehensive care focused on the wishes of each

15

individual patient; and

16

WHEREAS, Through pain management, symptom control, caregiver

17

training and assistance, and emotional and spiritual support,

18

patients are able to live fully up until the final moments,

surrounded and supported by the faces of loved ones, friends and

2

committed caregivers; and

3

WHEREAS, The provision of quality hospice and palliative care

4

reaffirms the belief in the essential dignity of every person,

5

regardless of age, health or social status and that people at

6

every stage of human life deserve to be treated with the utmost

7

respect and care; and

8

WHEREAS, Every year more than 1.5 million Americans living

9

with life-limiting illness and their families receive care from

10

the nation's hospice programs in communities throughout the

11

United States; and

12

WHEREAS, More than 468,000 trained volunteers contribute 22

13

million hours of service to hospice programs annually; and

14

WHEREAS, Hospice and palliative care providers encourage all

15

people to learn more about options of care and to share their

16

wishes with family, loved ones and their health care

17

professionals; and

18

WHEREAS, The National Hospice and Palliative Care

19

Organization (NHPCO) and its family of affiliate organizations

20

based at the National Center for Care at the End of Life all

21

work to help NHPCO's more than 44,000 members work toward a

22

shared vision of a world where individuals and families facing

23

serious illness, death and grief will experience the best that

24

humankind can offer; therefore be it

25

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of November

26

2012 as "National Hospice and Palliative Care Month" in

27

Pennsylvania and encourage all Pennsylvanians to increase their

28

understanding and awareness of care at the end of life.
