A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of October 7 through 13, 2012, as
"Influenza Prevention Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Each year in the United States, on average, more
than 200,000 people are hospitalized from influenza-related
complications, and approximately 36,000 people die from
influenza-related causes; and
WHEREAS, The most effective strategy for preventing influenza
is annual vaccination; and
WHEREAS, The United States Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention now recommends annual seasonal influenza vaccination
for all people six months of age and older; and
WHEREAS, Children and young adults five years of age to 19
years of age are three to four times more likely to be infected
with influenza than adults; and
WHEREAS, School-age children are the population group most
responsible for the transmission of contagious respiratory
viruses, including influenza; and
WHEREAS, Influenza vaccines not only protect vaccinated

individuals, but also help protect entire communities by
preventing and reducing the spread of influenza, as well as
reducing costs associated with missed work, doctor visits and
hospitalizations; and
WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians are encouraged to get influenza
vaccines for themselves, and all parents in this Commonwealth
are encouraged to ensure their children are vaccinated;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of October 7
through 13, 2012, as "Influenza Prevention Awareness Week" in
Pennsylvania.
