A RESOLUTION
1Observing March 1, 2013, as "St. David's Day" in Pennsylvania,
2and honoring the many Pennsylvanians of Welsh heritage.
3WHEREAS, St. David is the patron saint of Wales, and March 1,
4St. David's feast day, is the Welsh National Holiday, celebrated
5by Welsh people throughout the world; and
6WHEREAS, Since the 17th Century, a significant number of
7people moved from Wales to Pennsylvania seeking employment and
8religious freedom; and
9WHEREAS, William Penn and the Society of Friends, or Quakers,
10founded the heart of the Welsh settlement in Pennsylvania; and
11WHEREAS, Since Pennsylvania and Wales both include rare
12anthracite coal among their natural resources, many of the
13settlers from Wales settled in northeastern Pennsylvania's coal
14regions; and
15WHEREAS, The rich Welsh traditions and heritage have had a
16tremendous impact on Pennsylvania; and
17WHEREAS, St. David's Day unites Welsh people worldwide in a
1celebration of their identity; therefore be it
2RESOLVED, That the Senate observe March 1, 2013, as "St.
3David's Day" in Pennsylvania and honor the many Pennsylvanians
4of Welsh heritage.
