A RESOLUTION

Commending the outstanding service of inspectors of county and

2

city weights and measures offices and the Weights and

3

Measures Division of the Department of Agriculture in the

4

protection of our citizens by ensuring accuracy, equity and

5

confidence in commercial and retail measurements.

6

WHEREAS, Over 200 years ago, President John Adams signed the

7

first weights and measures law to protect consumers from

8

inaccurate measurements and disingenuous practices, and from

9

this first law, the weights and measures inspectors have

10

continued to protect buyers and sellers in every element of

11

daily commerce; and

12

WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is served by the

13

Weights and Measures Division of the Pennsylvania Department of

14

Agriculture and its regional weights and measures offices, and

15

Pennsylvania also has the distinction of being locally supported

16

by 18 county and two city weights and measures offices to

17

provide annual inspections in Pennsylvania in order to protect

18

our citizens and ensure accuracy, equity and confidence in

19

commercial and retail measurements; and

20

WHEREAS, The service performed by the weights and measures

inspectors is vitally important to our economy and every aspect

2

of daily life; and

3

WHEREAS, The inspectors use highly accurate equipment to

4

inspect and test commercial scales, meters, scanning equipment

5

and packaged products, and their jurisdiction includes the

6

weighing and measuring equipment found in warehouses, packing

7

plants, feed mills, shipping companies, lumberyards and gasoline

8

stations; and

9

WHEREAS, Through the efforts of these inspectors,

10

Pennsylvanians can be sure that they receive what they pay for

11

in terms of the amount of motor fuel, coal, firewood, home

12

heating oil, liquid propane gas and food products that they

13

purchase as well as feel confident in the accuracy of weights

14

and measures of small and medium commercial scales, large truck

15

scales, checkout scanner systems, package checking, timing

16

devices and petroleum terminal facilities; and

17

WHEREAS, In recognition of the excellent work of the weights

18

and measures inspectors in this Commonwealth, the Governor

19

proclaimed the week of February 28 through March 6, 2010, as

20

"Weights and Measures Week" in Pennsylvania; therefore be it

21

RESOLVED, That the Senate commend the weights and measures

22

inspectors in this Commonwealth for their outstanding public

23

service in the protection of our citizens by ensuring accuracy,

24

equity and confidence in commercial and retail measurements; and

25

be it further

26

RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage Pennsylvania residents to

27

look for current inspection approval seals when purchasing

28

products and report problems or concerns to the local weights

29

and measures office or by calling 1-877-TEST-007.
