| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating November 17, 2011, as "World Prematurity Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania, the first ever global effort to raise awareness |
3 | about the issue of premature birth around the world. |
4 | WHEREAS, Preterm birth or birth before 37 weeks of gestation, |
5 | is the leading cause of neonatal death in the United States and |
6 | around the world; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Nearly 13 million babies worldwide are born preterm, |
8 | more than one-half million babies in the United States annually, |
9 | including more than 17,000 in this Commonwealth; and |
10 | WHEREAS, According to data provided by the World Health |
11 | Organization's Department of Reproductive Health and Research, |
12 | only Africa exceeds North America in rates of preterm birth; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Most people are unaware of this common, serious and |
14 | costly problem and its enormous emotional toll on families; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Babies who survive preterm birth often experience |
16 | lifelong health problems such as cerebral palsy, vision and |
17 | hearing loss and intellectual disabilities; and |

1 | WHEREAS, The March of Dimes is collaborating on a global |
2 | effort to save babies from premature birth by funding research |
3 | to find the causes and by educating health professionals and |
4 | women about caring for high-risk pregnancies and premature |
5 | babies; therefore be it |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate November 17, 2011, as |
7 | "World Prematurity Day" in Pennsylvania and encourage efforts to |
8 | fund research and programs to find causes of prematurity. |
