| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating September 11, 2011, as "Pennsylvania's Day of |
2 | Remembrance" of the events of September 11, 2001. |
3 | WHEREAS, There can be no greater tragedy than the intentional |
4 | taking of innocent lives; and |
5 | WHEREAS, On September 11, 2001, Al Qaeda terrorists hijacked |
6 | and intentionally flew two planes into the twin towers of the |
7 | World Trade Center in Manhattan and hijacked and crashed a third |
8 | aircraft into the United States Department of Defense |
9 | headquarters at the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia; and |
10 | WHEREAS, The first battle of the War on Terrorism took place |
11 | in the skies over Somerset County, Pennsylvania, and was |
12 | ultimately won by the heroism of the passengers and crew aboard |
13 | United Airlines Flight 93 who courageously fought to regain |
14 | control of the plane and prevented additional death and |
15 | destruction; and |
16 | WHEREAS, These attacks claimed nearly 3,000 innocent lives, |

1 | becoming the most devastating attack on American soil in our |
2 | 229-year history; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Many individuals unselfishly gave their lives in |
4 | unyielding courage and sacrifice with the passengers' and crew's |
5 | resistance that occurred on United Airlines Flight 93 in |
6 | Somerset County, Pennsylvania; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Their acts of courage and sacrifice for our country |
8 | are worthy of acknowledgment and commendation, and they shall |
9 | remain in our hearts and minds forever, their remembrance |
10 | continuing to be passed on to future generations; and |
11 | WHEREAS, In the ten years since the attacks, our nation has |
12 | come together in support and remembrance of those who lost their |
13 | lives in the attacks, including those who lost their lives in |
14 | responding to assist those in harm's way; and |
15 | WHEREAS, This September the dedication is scheduled for the |
16 | Flight 93 Memorial in Somerset County, which is the result of a |
17 | ground swell of financial support from average Americans; and |
18 | WHEREAS, September 11, 2011, marks the tenth anniversary of |
19 | the attacks, which should never be forgotten; therefore be it |
20 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate September 11, 2011, as |
21 | "Pennsylvania's Day of Remembrance" in honor of those persons |
22 | who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001, attacks, those |
23 | individuals directly affected by the tragedy of the attacks and |
24 | those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country fighting |
25 | the war on terrorism; and be it further |
26 | RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage all schools, public |
27 | offices and businesses to pause in a moment of silence to |
28 | reflect upon the tragedy and the sacrifices made on September |
29 | 11, 2001, and to further remember the families of those persons |
30 | who perished and all of our fellow citizens affected by this |
