| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Magee-Womens Hospital of |
2 | UPMC in Pittsburgh. |
3 | WHEREAS, The Elizabeth Steel Magee Hospital was founded on |
4 | January 19, 1911, when its first patients, 14 women, arrived in |
5 | horse-drawn ambulances at the hospital's makeshift facility at |
6 | Forbes Avenue and Halket Street in Oakland; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The hospital now sits on the site of the Christopher |
8 | Lyman Magee home, once known as The Maples; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Christopher Magee, a State senator and Pittsburgh |
10 | political boss who died in 1901, stipulated in his will that, |
11 | after his wife's death, his estate should be used to build and |
12 | endow a hospital to admit women without any question as to their |
13 | background; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Named after Magee's mother, the permanent Elizabeth |
15 | Steel Magee Hospital opened on October 15, 1915, accommodating |
16 | 140 adults and eight infants, but was closed in 1918 during the |
17 | worst influenza epidemic in United States history and then |

1 | leased to the Army for treatment of stricken soldiers before |
2 | reopening in 1920; and |
3 | WHEREAS, The hospital continued to evolve during the 20th |
4 | century, with the additions of a nurses' home in 1939, a new |
5 | maternity suite in 1956 and a premature nursery in 1961; and |
6 | WHEREAS, After several expansions, Magee merged in 1962 with |
7 | Women's Hospital, a hospital specializing in the treatment of |
8 | diseases and conditions for women and physically linked to |
9 | Presbyterian Hospital, at which point the hospital adopted its |
10 | current name; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Along with the 1962 merger came the addition of the |
12 | Miller Wing, which housed eight operating rooms, 69 patient |
13 | beds, two nurseries, offices and research laboratories; and |
14 | WHEREAS, The hospital merged again in 1999, becoming Magee- |
15 | Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center |
16 | (UPMC); and |
17 | WHEREAS, The hospital's first baby was born on opening day |
18 | and since then, more than 500,000 babies have been born at the |
19 | hospital, with nearly 10,000 babies born there each year |
20 | accounting for 45% of the annual births in Allegheny County; and |
21 | WHEREAS, Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC has traditionally |
22 | sought to advance understanding of women's health and the |
23 | practice of gender-specific medicine; and |
24 | WHEREAS, Last year, the hospital ranked sixth in gynecologic |
25 | care in the annual U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of |
26 | America's Best Hospitals issue and ranked 42nd in women's cancer |
27 | care; and |
28 | WHEREAS, The staff at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC helps |
29 | families through the entire reproductive process by providing |
30 | fertility treatments, fetal therapy, childbirth services and |

1 | education and support to mothers before birth and throughout the |
2 | breastfeeding process; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC is not just for women, |
4 | for today's hospital provides medical services to men, women and |
5 | infants with medical excellence and innovation in outstanding |
6 | patient care, education, research, standards development, |
7 | advocacy and health and environment; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Specialty services provided by Magee-Womens Hospital |
9 | of UPMC have attracted patients from across the country and |
10 | include such services as bariatric surgery and the treatment of |
11 | obesity and abdominal problems, robotic assisted surgery and |
12 | thoracic surgery; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The hospital's Healthy Community initiative provides |
14 | health and education programs to those who are underserved due |
15 | to income, transportation or other barriers; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC and its employees have |
17 | a long and established history of dedication in providing |
18 | exceptional patient care and medical services; therefore be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the 100th anniversary of |
20 | Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC on January 19, 2011, and its |
21 | tradition of outstanding medical service and offer best wishes |
22 | for growth and prosperity in the years to come. |
