A RESOLUTION

  

1

Designating May 1, 2009, as "Loyalty Day" in Pennsylvania.

2

WHEREAS, The Department of Pennsylvania, Veterans of Foreign

3

Wars of the United States, is conducting its annual "Loyalty

4

Day" program on the grounds of the State Capitol on May 1, 2009;

5

and

6

WHEREAS, In 1958 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into

7

law Public Law 85-529, which designates May 1 of each year as

8

"Loyalty Day"; and

9

WHEREAS, "Loyalty Day" is set aside as a special day for

10

reaffirming loyalty to the United States and recognizing

11

American freedom; and

12

WHEREAS, The President of the United States annually issues a

13

proclamation calling on officials to proudly display the flag of

14

the United States on all Government buildings on this special

15

day; and

WHEREAS, Citizens and elected officials are encouraged to

2

observe "Loyalty Day" in schools and other appropriate places;

3

and

4

WHEREAS, In the post-9/11 world, it is fitting that the

5

citizens of this Commonwealth pause on "Loyalty Day" to reflect

6

on the privileges of freedom, democracy and unmatched

7

opportunity we enjoy in the United States; therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 1, 2009, as "Loyalty

9

Day" in Pennsylvania, proudly joining the Department of

10

Pennsylvania, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, in

11

its observance and commending the department for its continued

12

service to our nation and this Commonwealth; and be it further

13

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

14

the VFW State Commander on May 1, 2009, at the "Loyalty Day"

15

program conducted by the Department of Pennsylvania, Veterans of

16

Foreign Wars of the United States, on the grounds of the State

17

Capitol.
