| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the Luzerne County Colorectal Cancer Task Force for |
2 | its work to combat colon cancer and encouraging citizens of |
3 | Luzerne County to undergo screening. |
4 | WHEREAS, Despite being a cancer that can be prevented, |
5 | colorectal cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer |
6 | deaths in the United States and the leading cause of cancer |
7 | deaths among nonsmokers; and |
8 | WHEREAS, In 2010, an estimated 142,570 Americans will be |
9 | diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and 51,370 Americans will die |
10 | from the disease, including 2,610 Pennsylvanians; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Perhaps the least understood aspect of colorectal |
12 | cancer is the fact that it can be stopped before it starts by |
13 | getting screened and removing noncancerous polyps; and |
14 | WHEREAS, If cancerous polyps are detected early, 90% of |
15 | people survive at least five years; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Increasing colorectal cancer screening among adults |
2 | 50 years of age and older represents the single greatest |
3 | opportunity to decrease colorectal cancer death rates in this |
4 | country; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Despite this fact, colorectal cancer screening rates |
6 | in this Commonwealth are lower than most other states, and the |
7 | incidence and mortality rates for colorectal cancer in |
8 | Pennsylvania are higher than the national average; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Luzerne County has an alarming rate of colorectal |
10 | cancer diagnoses - 20% higher than the State average and nearly |
11 | 24% higher than the national average; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The Luzerne County Colorectal Cancer Task Force was |
13 | formed to combat the high rates of colorectal cancer incidence |
14 | in Luzerne County; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The Luzerne County Colorectal Task Force is |
16 | comprised of representatives from the American Cancer Society, |
17 | Geisinger Health Plan, King's College, Maternal and Family |
18 | Health Services, Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, Wilkes- |
19 | Barre City Health Department and Colorectal Cancer Survivors; |
20 | and |
21 | WHEREAS, The Luzerne County Colorectal Cancer Task Force has |
22 | created a pilot program targeting employees of five businesses |
23 | in Luzerne County to educate and promote screening for |
24 | colorectal cancer; and |
25 | WHEREAS, The pilot has had success in improving screening |
26 | rates for employees of the five businesses and is an example of |
27 | a best community health practice; and |
28 | WHEREAS, The task force will continue to expand its pilot |
29 | program with a goal of increasing screening rates throughout |
30 | Luzerne County and to serve as a model for the entire |

1 | Commonwealth; therefore be it |
2 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the |
3 | important efforts of the Luzerne County Colorectal Cancer Task |
4 | Force; and be it further |
5 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage every |
6 | citizen 50 years of age and older and those with a strong family |
7 | history to talk to a health care provider about screening |
8 | options. |
