| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the month of September 2012 as "Hunger Action Month" |
2 | in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, September 2012 has been designated as "Hunger Action |
4 | Month" to provide an opportunity for communities in the United |
5 | States to unite to focus attention on the persistent problem of |
6 | domestic hunger; and |
7 | WHEREAS, For one in seven Pennsylvanians, hunger is a |
8 | reality; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Many United States households experience hunger, and |
10 | some people in these households frequently skip meals or eat too |
11 | little, sometimes going without food for a whole day; and |
12 | WHEREAS, In 2011, 14.7% of United States households were food |
13 | insecure (17.5 million households), meaning their access to |
14 | enough food is limited by a lack of money and other resources, |
15 | which remains the highest recorded prevalence rate of food |
16 | insecurity since 1995 when the first national food security |

1 | survey was conducted; and |
2 | WHEREAS, In 2011, 5,116,000 Pennsylvanians were food |
3 | insecure; and |
4 | WHEREAS, In 2010, more than 20% of Pennsylvania's children |
5 | experienced food insecurity; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Members of these households have lower-quality diets |
7 | or must resort to seeking emergency food because they cannot |
8 | always afford the food they need; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The costs of other essentials, such as home heating, |
10 | gasoline, housing and medical care, have increased |
11 | significantly, and for families caught in the squeeze between |
12 | declining wages and rising costs, the food budget becomes a |
13 | frequent pressure point; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Utilization of emergency food assistance becomes a |
15 | way for these families to keep food on the table while still |
16 | paying the bills; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Food banks, food rescue organizations, soup |
18 | kitchens, food pantries, faith-based organizations, businesses |
19 | and individuals are donating time, raising funds and giving food |
20 | to help their neighbors; and |
21 | WHEREAS, Individuals benefiting from the availability of |
22 | donated food range from infants and toddlers, school-age |
23 | children and adolescents to single mothers, single fathers, two- |
24 | parent families, veterans and their families and seniors; and |
25 | WHEREAS, Research shows that preschool and school-age |
26 | children who experience severe hunger have higher levels of |
27 | chronic illness, anxiety and depression and behavioral problems |
28 | than children with no hunger; therefore be it |
29 | RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania recognize the month |
30 | of September 2012 as "Hunger Action Month" in Pennsylvania. |
