| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Urging the Department of Health to implement certain |
2 | requirements relating to tetanus/diphtheria booster |
3 | immunizations. |
4 | WHEREAS, Tetanus and diphtheria are serious and sometimes |
5 | fatal diseases which can be prevented with timely immunizations |
6 | in childhood; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Tetanus is caused by bacteria that enter the body |
8 | through a wound, causing rigidity and spasms of the skeletal |
9 | muscles; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Death occurs in 11% of tetanus cases; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Tetanus typically occurs in persons with inadequate |
12 | immunization; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that is spread |
14 | through contact with an infected individual; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Diphtheria can cause death through airway |
16 | obstruction, pneumonia, heart failure and paralysis of the |
17 | muscles used for swallowing; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Vaccination against diphtheria has successfully |
2 | reduced the incidence of this disease in the United States; and |
3 | WHEREAS, The incidence of diphtheria has risen in recent |
4 | years in other countries where the immunization rate has fallen; |
5 | and |
6 | WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention |
7 | recommends a combined tetanus/diphtheria (Td) booster at 11 to |
8 | 12 years of age if five years have elapsed since the last dose |
9 | of tetanus and diphtheria vaccines; therefore be it |
10 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the |
11 | Department of Health to implement the Centers for Disease |
12 | Control and Prevention's recommended requirements for Td booster |
13 | immunization for school children who are entering seventh grade |
14 | or who are 12 years of age in an ungraded class. |
