| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Celebrating the success of the Hershey Bears 2008-2009 hockey |
2 | team in winning the American Hockey League championship on |
3 | Friday, June 12, 2009, and bringing the Calder Cup to Hershey |
4 | for the unprecedented tenth time in American Hockey League |
5 | history. |
6 | WHEREAS, The 2008-2009 professional ice hockey season ended |
7 | on June 12, 2009, with not one, but two Pennsylvania teams |
8 | bringing home their league's highly coveted trophies; and |
9 | WHEREAS, While in Detroit, Michigan, the Pittsburgh Penguins |
10 | were dispatching the favored Detroit Red Wings 2-1 to win the |
11 | National Hockey League's Stanley Cup and the Hershey Bears were |
12 | in Winnipeg, Canada, defeating the Manitoba Moose 4-1 and |
13 | proving which American Hockey League (AHL) team deserved to win |
14 | the AHL championship Calder Cup; and |
15 | WHEREAS, If Pennsylvania did not have an advanced case of |

1 | hockey fever before the week started, it was on fire by Friday |
2 | evening, especially when both games ended in victory for our |
3 | beloved Pennsylvania teams; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Older than the Pittsburgh Penguins by three decades, |
5 | the Hershey Bears made history by winning the 2009 Calder Cup |
6 | for the tenth time, an unprecedented number of Calder Cup |
7 | victories; and |
8 | WHEREAS, A franchise of the Washington Capitals, the Hershey |
9 | Bears are managed by Doug Yingst, who has been with the |
10 | organization for 27 years, and coached by Bob Woods, who took |
11 | the reins midseason in 2007; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Mr. Woods has the distinction of being a part of |
13 | Hershey's Calder Cup wins as a player from 1996 to 1997, as an |
14 | assistant coach from 2005 to 2006 and as head coach from 2008 to |
15 | 2009; and |
16 | WHEREAS, A record of 52 wins against 31 losses during the |
17 | regular season sealed Hershey's slot in the playoffs, which |
18 | began on April 16 and ended with a 4-0 game series over the |
19 | Philadelphia Phantoms; and |
20 | WHEREAS, The next series of games in the playoffs against the |
21 | Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, a franchise of the 2009 Stanley |
22 | Cup winners, proved to be Hershey's toughest opponent, as |
23 | Hershey emerged from being down 2-3 in the series to advancing |
24 | after winning the series 4-3; and |
25 | WHEREAS, After the Penguins, the Bears dispatched the |
26 | Providence Bruins in a 4-1 series, winning the last three games |
27 | on the Bruins' home ice; and |
28 | WHEREAS, The final matchup series began on May 30 against the |
29 | Manitoba Moose and ended June 12 on Manitoba ice with the Bears |
30 | winning a 4-2 series and outscoring the Moose 4-1 in the final |

2 | WHEREAS, Bruised, sore, tired and full of stitches, the |
3 | Hershey Bears playoff team brought home "the Cup" to cheering |
4 | fans for an unprecedented tenth time in AHL history; and |

19 | 15 playoffs, and the AHL 2008-2009 season's Most Valuable |
20 | Player, and of rookie goalie and MVP of the playoffs, Michal |
21 | Neuvirth; and |
22 | WHEREAS, The town of Hershey is once again known as |
23 | "Hockeytown" to the delight of Pennsylvania ice hockey fans; |
24 | therefore be it |
25 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives celebrate the |
26 | success of the Hershey Bears 2008-2009 American Hockey League |
27 | team in winning the AHL championship on Friday, June 12, 2009, |
28 | and bringing the Calder Cup to Hershey for the unprecedented |
29 | tenth time in AHL history. |
