A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the month of May 2011 as "Melanoma and Skin Cancer

2

Detection and Prevention Month" in Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Most people do not realize that the skin is the

4

largest and most visible organ of the body and performs many

5

essential tasks, such as regulating body temperature, protecting

6

internal organs, providing sensation and supporting metabolic

7

functions; and

8

WHEREAS, Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the

9

United States; and

10

WHEREAS, Current estimates are that one in five Americans

11

will develop skin cancer in their lifetime; and

12

WHEREAS, Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer

13

and it is the leading cause of death from skin disease; and

14

WHEREAS, When detected early, the survival rate for patients

15

with melanoma is about 99%, and the survival rate falls to 15%

for those with advanced disease; and

2

WHEREAS, In 2009, the American Cancer Society estimated that

3

68,130 new cases of melanoma would be diagnosed and that 8,700

4

deaths would occur from melanoma; and

5

WHEREAS, Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young

6

adults between 25 and 29 years of age and the second most common

7

form of cancer for adolescents and young adults between 15 and

8

29 years of age; and

9

WHEREAS, The estimated total direct cost associated with the

10

treatment of melanoma in 2006 was $1.906 billion; and

11

WHEREAS, The Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and

12

Prevention Month is a public education service designated to

13

promote the prevention and early detection of melanoma and other

14

skin cancers; therefore be it

15

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

16

month of May 2011 as "Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and

17

Prevention Month" in Pennsylvania.
