A RESOLUTION

1Recognizing the month of January 2013 as "Stalking Awareness
2Month" in Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, January 2013 will be observed nationally as the
4fifth annual "Stalking Awareness Month"; and

5WHEREAS, More than one million women and almost 400,000 men
6are victims of stalkers annually; and

7WHEREAS, Most frequently, stalkers are former intimate
8partners and abusers of the person being stalked, and 76% of
9persons who have been murdered by their stalker have at one time
10been an intimate partner of that stalker; and

11WHEREAS, Stalking victims experience lost time from work,
12anxiety, insomnia, social dysfunction and severe depression in
13significantly higher numbers than the general public; and

14WHEREAS, Stalking pervasively occurs in neighborhoods, on
15college campuses and in workplace environments and is a crime

1under the laws of all 50 states, the District of Columbia and
2Federal statute; and

3WHEREAS, Notwithstanding these facts, awareness of the
4pervasiveness and detrimental social impact of stalking is
5minimal; and

6WHEREAS, To raise social awareness, January 2013 has been set
7aside nationwide as "Stalking Awareness Month"; therefore be it

8RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
9month of January 2013 as "Stalking Awareness Month" in
10Pennsylvania.
