A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of April 2011 as "Pennsylvania Community

2

College Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Two hundred thirty thousand students are enrolled in

4

credit programs at this Commonwealth's community colleges, and

5

186,000 students are enrolled in noncredit courses with a focus

6

on increasing workplace skills; and

7

WHEREAS, One out of every four undergraduates of this

8

Commonwealth attends a community college; and

9

WHEREAS, Community colleges offer and support dual enrollment

10

of more than 12,600 high school students in more than half of

11

this Commonwealth's school districts; and

WHEREAS, Community colleges facilitate high-tech career

2

pathways with seamless curriculums by collaborating in 2+2+2

3

project grants; and

4

WHEREAS, Community colleges offer increased access through

5

distance learning courses and programs, allowing students to

6

build their academic credentials and certifications while

7

maintaining their work schedules and family responsibilities;

8

and

9

WHEREAS, Community colleges have developed more than 1,000

10

articulation agreements to ensure students seamlessly transition

11

from the community college to a four-year degree with more than

12

20,000 students transferring each year; and

13

WHEREAS, Community colleges continue to graduate students in

14

many of the high-demand and high-growth industries vital to the

15

State's economy, particularly in health care, public safety,

16

energy and green jobs, as well as many others; and

17

WHEREAS, Community colleges offer individualized credit and

18

noncredit courses and programs that enhance the work force

19

pipeline and stimulate the Commonwealth's economy; and

20

WHEREAS, Community colleges have developed 84 new or

21

redesigned programs in response to regional needs of employers

22

and work force trends; and

23

WHEREAS, Employers throughout this Commonwealth have

24

contracted with community colleges to provide training for more

25

employees; therefore be it

26

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

27

month of April 2011 as "Pennsylvania Community College Month" in

28

Pennsylvania and encourage all citizens to recognize, appreciate

29

and support the contributions that community colleges make to

30

their communities and to this Commonwealth.
