A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life of Charles "Chuck" William Tanner, former

2

general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who died on

3

February 11, 2011.

4

WHEREAS, Charles "Chuck" William Tanner, former general

5

manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, died on February 11, 2011;

6

and

7

WHEREAS, Chuck Tanner, a life-long resident of New Castle,

8

led the Pirates to the World Series championship in 1979 and

9

remained a fan favorite in Pittsburgh; and

10

WHEREAS, Born on July 4, 1928, in New Castle to Anna Marie

11

Baka and Charles Tanner Sr., he attended Shenanago High School,

12

where he excelled in football, basketball, track and field and,

most notably, baseball; and

2

WHEREAS, After high school, Chuck Tanner followed his dream

3

into professional baseball, playing for the Milwaukee Braves,

4

Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels; and

5

WHEREAS, Mr. Tanner's professional career is best known for

6

his feats as a manager, where he showed an optimistic attitude,

7

mental toughness and hard-work philosophy that filtered down

8

through his teams; and

9

WHEREAS, He began his managerial career in 1970 with the

10

Chicago White Sox, working with them for more than five seasons

11

and receiving the Manager of the Year Award in 1972, before

12

moving to manage the Oakland Athletics in 1975; and

13

WHEREAS, His arrival in Pittsburgh with the Pirates in 1976

14

came as part of a trade with Oakland in which the Pirates

15

received Chuck Tanner in return for catcher Manny Sanguillen and

16

$100,000, one of the few trades involving managerial staff in

17

the Major Leagues; and

18

WHEREAS, Three years later, Mr. Tanner reached the pinnacle

19

of his managerial career when the Pirates brought home the

20

National League Pennant and the World Series championship; and

21

WHEREAS, After his managing career ended, Chuck Tanner worked

22

as a scout for the Milwaukee Brewers and Cleveland Indians and

23

in 2007 became senior adviser for the Pittsburgh Pirates; and

24

WHEREAS, Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Babs, he is

25

survived by sons, Mark, Gary, Brent and Bruce; brothers William

26

and Robert; and 11 grandchildren; and

27

WHEREAS, A legend in his time and a part of Pirates history,

28

Chuck Tanner will long be remembered for his outstanding

29

contributions to professional baseball and especially to the

30

Pittsburgh Pirates; therefore be it

Pittsburgh Pirates, who died on February 11, 2011.
