  SPRENGER, THATCHER, THOMPSON, VEGA PEDERSON, WEIDNER, WHITSETT,
  WILLIAMSON, WITT, Senators CLOSE, EDWARDS, GEORGE, HANSELL,
  STEINER HAYWARD, WHITSETT, WINTERS

  Whereas Ashton James Eaton is a native Oregonian and attended
Mountain View High School in Bend, Oregon, where he was a
standout football player and a state champion in the 400-meter
dash and long jump; and
  Whereas Ashton James Eaton graduated from the University of
Oregon in 2010 as a five-time National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA) champion in the decathlon and heptathlon; and
  Whereas Ashton James Eaton won the Bowerman in 2010, the
highest honor for a collegiate track and field athlete; and
  Whereas Ashton James Eaton has set and broken NCAA, Pac-10 and
University of Oregon records, as well as multiple world records;
and
  Whereas Ashton James Eaton earned a score of 9039 in the
decathlon at the 2012 United States Olympic Team Track and Field
Trials in Eugene, Oregon, and is only the second person in world
history to break into the 9000-point bracket; and
  Whereas Ashton James Eaton broke his own heptathlon world
record at the 2011 International Indoor Combined Events meet in
Tallinn, Estonia, and again in 2012 at the International
Association of Athletics Federation World Indoor Championships;
and
  Whereas Ashton James Eaton won the gold medal in the decathlon
at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and is widely regarded as the
'world's greatest athlete'; and
  Whereas Ashton Eaton's discipline, maturity, integrity and
success set an example for many young people in central Oregon
and throughout this state; and
  Whereas Ashton Eaton's character and extraordinary achievements
make him a positive role model who inspires hope in young
Oregonians that they can achieve their potential and excel in any
endeavor through dedication and hard work; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:

  That we, the members of the Seventy-seventh Legislative
Assembly, honor Ashton James Eaton for his outstanding athletic
achievements and awards in track and field, for his exemplary
character and for bringing great pride to the State of Oregon
through his inspiring accomplishments in the United States and
internationally.
