To designate the last week of September as "American | 1 |
Indian Week." | 2 |
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE SENATE CONCURRING):
WHEREAS, American Indians have made and continue to make | 3 |
significant contributions towards shaping Ohio into the great | 4 |
state that it is today. The ancient cultures built monumental | 5 |
earthworks in Ohio encoded with astronomical alignments that have | 6 |
captured the world's attention, and many of Ohio's geographic | 7 |
features and cities have historic Native American Indian names; | 8 |
and | 9 |
WHEREAS, American Indians who have contributed to the rich | 10 |
history and culture of our state include the members of the | 11 |
ancient cultures now known as the Adena, Hopewell, and Fort | 12 |
Ancient, and historic tribes that include the Shawnee, Miami, | 13 |
Delaware, Potawatomi, Seneca, Wyandot, Peoria, and Ottawa; and | 14 |
WHEREAS, American Indians have made an indelible mark on the | 15 |
landscape, history, and culture of Ohio. Today, many American | 16 |
Indians call Ohio "home," working and raising their families here; | 17 |
and | 18 |
WHEREAS, American Indians living in Ohio can be justifiably | 19 |
proud of their rich heritage, spirituality, and traditions. It is | 20 |
important that they receive encouragement from the state's elected | 21 |
officials to continue teaching their culture to their children and | 22 |
sharing it with their fellow Ohioans; now therefore be it | 23 |
RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 130th General Assembly | 24 |
of the State of Ohio, designate the fourth week of September as | 25 |
"American Indian Week," in conjunction with "American Indian Day" | 26 |
on the fourth Saturday of September, to honor the significant | 27 |
influence that American Indians have had on Ohio and to encourage | 28 |
the teaching and sharing of their culture; and be it further | 29 |
RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the House of Representatives | 30 |
transmit duly authenticated copies of this resolution to the news | 31 |
media of Ohio. | 32 |
