STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 7694 IN SENATE January 7, 2022 ___________ Introduced by Sen. RIVERA -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the public health law, in relation to newborn screening for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Paragraph (j) of subdivision 1 of section 2500-a of the 2 public health law, as added by a chapter of the laws of 2021 amending 3 the public health law relating to newborn screening for adrenoleukodys- 4 trophy and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, as proposed in 5 legislative bills numbers A. 4572 and S. 4316, is amended to read as 6 follows: 7 (j) Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency using a quantitative 8 enzymatic test or other diagnostic test in cases where: the newborn 9 infant presents with hemolytic anemia, hemolytic jaundice, or early-on- 10 set increasing neonatal jaundice, that is, jaundice (bilirubin level 11 greater than fortieth percentile for age in hours) persisting beyond the 12 day of birth through the week after birth; the newborn infant has been 13 admitted to the hospital for jaundice following birth; or the biological 14 parent of the newborn infant indicates a family, racial, or ethnic risk 15 of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, including having 16 significant African, Asian, Mediterranean, or Middle Eastern ancestry. 17 § 2. This act shall take effect on the same date and in the same 18 manner as a chapter of the laws of 2021 amending the public health law 19 relating to newborn screening for adrenoleukodystrophy and 20 glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, as proposed in legislative 21 bills numbers A. 4572 and S. 4316, takes effect. Effective immediately, 22 the commissioner of health shall make regulations and take other actions 23 reasonably necessary to implement this act on that date.
